چکیده

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations and N, C stable isotope signatures were determined in mosses Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. from 61 sites of 3 European regions: Île-de-France (France); Navarra (Spain); the Swiss Plateau and Basel area (Switzerland). Total PAH concentrations of 100e700 ng g!1, as well as d13C values of !32 to !29& and d15N values of !11 to !3& were measured. Pearson correlation tests revealed opposite trends between high molecular weight PAH (4e6 aromatic rings) content and d13C values. Partial Least Square regressions explained the very significant correlations (r > 0.91, p < 0.001) between high molecular weight PAH concentrations by local urban land use (<10 km) and environmental factors such as elevation and pluviometry. Finally, specific correlations between heavy metal and PAH concentrations were attributed to industrial emissions in Switzerland and road traffic emissions in Spain.

Stable isotope variations in benthic filter feeders across a large depth gradient on the continental shelf

Spatial variations in carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (d13C and d15N) of benthic filter feeders were investigated on an inshore-offshore gradient (0e250 km) along the continental shelf of the northern Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic Ocean). d13C and d15N values were measured in muscle tissues of four filter-feeding mollusc species (epifaunal: Pecten maximus, Aequipecten opercularis; infaunal: Gl...

Factors controlling seasonal variations in stable isotope composition of particulate organic matter in a soft water eutrophic lake

Weekly water samples were taken to measure stable isotope composition (d13C and d15N) of particulate organic matter (POM) in Lake Wauberg, Florida, from June 1994 to May 1995. The average d13C of POM was 219.3%, consistent with an autochthonous origin from phytoplankton production, and exhibited a seasonal pattern that coincided with changes in water temperature, pH, CO2 concentration, and phyt...

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of human dental calculus: a potentially new non-destructive proxy for paleodietary analysis

Fifty-eight dental calculus samples from medieval and post-medieval skeletons from Vitoria, Spain, and a single sample from an Alaskan Inuit were tested for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions. There was sufficient carbon and nitrogen concentrations to obtain d13C and d15N values, and the samples from Spain produced results that were replicable and comparable to European isotope val...

Compositional and interlake variability of zooplankton affect baseline stable isotope signatures

Zooplankton are commonly used to establish a baseline isotopic signature for pelagic production in lakes. Our objective was to evaluate this approach by quantifying among-lake and within-lake variability of d13C and d15N for different taxa of pelagic zooplankton. We measured the d13C and d15N of Daphnia, Holopedium, and calanoid copepods from four lakes sampled from June to November 2001 and fr...
